Every year, the United States generates approximately 230 million tons of "trash"--about 4.6 pounds per person per day. Less than one-quarter of it is recycled; the rest is incinerated or buried in landfills. With a little forethought, we could reuse or recycle more than 70 percent of the landfilled waste, which includes valuable materials such as glass, metal, and paper. This would reduce the demand on virgin sources of these materials and eliminate potentially severe environmental, economic, and public health problems

Now that they know they are generating more and more waste, then it would be great if they will be able to know how to recycle, not just letting some organizations or a government to do the recycling for them.

Reuse will not happen if there is no economic incentive... not just a token 5 cent plastic bag fee, it has to be expensive, probably factor long term cost of land fill, including environmental cost, in every bag.

To be fair to American consumer there has to be choices in local market which use less packing material and the product is of same quality. Which is not there at-least in main stream grocery and other stores.
