What can we do save earth- here's our bit-

Mother Nature is rebelling against us and we’re eventually reaping what we have sown. The Greenhouse Effect is taking its toll on our earth. Scientists estimate 2020 to be the year without winter. Sea levels are expected to rise and displace millions of people. Usable and edible water is set to be the most priced commodity. Agriculture will be severely affected and food shortages will mount. Dengue fever will rise while diarrhoea and malnutrition will kill people if they survive calamities like floods, tsunamis and earthquakes.

While we keep contemplating what is the inevitable, there is a lot we can do by ourselves to delay the same. India Today (India's Leading Magazine) lists 25 tips that can make a difference. So, here’s presenting India Today’s survivor’s guide on what you can do to help bring down carbon dioxide emission and combat global warming –

1) Change your bulbs – Replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent, they consume one-quarter of the electricity and last longer
2) Use solar devices to heat water
3) Construct green buildings – Obviously not the colour of the wall! If you are planning to build a house or an office, hire an architect who could work out ways to optimize the use of energy.
4) Turn computers off when not in use. Also avoid the standby mode.
5) Switch off the lights and fans when not in use.
6) Conserve water. Use sprinklers or drip irrigation devices for watering lawns or grow crops.
7) Check your tyres. Maintaining the right degree of pressure in car and motorcycle tyres improves on mileage considerably and saves fuel.
8. Buy energy efficient appliances. Go for models whose USP is energy efficiency. It will cut your electricity bills and India’s emission levels.
9) Prepare for disasters. Ensure that local hospitals and authorities are well equipped to handle calamities.
10) Buy fuel efficient cars. For every litre of petrol consumed, about four kg of carbon dioxide gets injected into the atmosphere.
11) Walk, don’t drive. If you must drive, combine a lot of chores.
12) Reduce air travel. It would save you money and the world a whole lot of carbon emissions.
13) Turn the geyser off after a bath so that water is heated only when you need it.
14) Consume less. When you are about to buy something, ask yourself if you really need it.
15) Turn the tap off while soaping your face, brushing or shaving.
16) Recycle.
17) Switch to wind power. If you are setting up a factory, or in any way in a position to use wind power, use it.
18) Shun plastic bags.
19) Use public transport. Not auto-rickshaws, use the bus or metro.
20) Save paper.
21) Rationalize the price of electricity. Ensure installation of energy efficient pump sets. Put off switches when not in use.
22) Grow more trees. If every human being planted one tree, we would have billions of trees growing. That would take away thousands of tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
23) Protest against cutting of trees. Why give away what we already have!
24) Switch to bio-fuels. Be among the first to drive a car running on alternative fuels – a whole range is being readied.
25) Let others know. You may be conserving the natural resources but if your neighbour isn’t, you are still a goner. Educate others.

Hey this is a very nice article. One striking thing about all such articles is the mention of "No plastic bags".
I really dont know how many of us or the people who write these articles actually make sure that atleast their family members carry a cloth bag when they go out for grocery shopping

PS: I love this spell check feature :D

What we can do to reduce Global Warming:
i. Reduce, Reuse and Recycle Less production and consumption will reduce air pollution.
ii. Reduce or eliminate the use of products made with or which contain chlorofluorocarbons (CFC's)
iii. Maintain and dispose of your air conditioners and refrigerators properly
iv. Reduce your vehicle pollution
v. Use clean fuels such as CNG (compressed natural gas), LPG (liquid propane gas), reformulated, or "clean" gasoline, which is becoming more widely available, if it is an option.
vi. Reduce consumption of electricity which is produced in a non-environmentally safe manner.
vii. Consume less pesticide-dependant foods.
viii. Use propane or natural gas grills, if possible, as they pollute less than charcoal with lighter fluid.
ix. Use low or no VOC (volatile organic compound) products. instead use water based paints, glues etc.
x. Landscape with native plants
xi. Compost your household, kitchen and yard wastes.
